In the CCL Test, a testing officer plays a recording for the test taker to interpret and translate. This recording consists of two dialogues. Each dialogue represents a conversation between a native English Speaker and a native LOTE speaker. A candidate’s response is recorded for the marking procedure. Each dialogue is of approximately 300 words, nearly half in English and half in LOTE. The dialogue is again divided into different segments. Each segment is of maximum 35 words. The time allotted for the test is maximum 30 minutes.

How the NAATI CCL test marked?

At least two trained examiners mark CCL tests independently. The CCL test comprises two dialogues and each dialogue is marked by the examiner using a deductive marking system. CCL test candidates will primarily be marked on their ability to communicate effectively in English and the Language other than English (LOTE). Language quality (both LOTE and English) is considered and the candidate must also reflect the elements of register and style in the original. Candidates should demonstrate full comprehension, and language production should conform to the accepted norms of the language. Marks will be deducted for errors in the above elements (this includes grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary and register). Each dialogue receives a mark out of 45. In order to pass a candidate needs to score at least 29 out of 45 for each dialogue and score at least 63 out of 90 overall.
When NAATI issues the result for the CCL test it will be based on the mark achieved:

  • PASS: 63 or higher (out of 90)
