As of August 2025, the Department of Home Affairs has officially approved three new English language tests for use across all Australian visa subclasses, opening up new opportunities for applicants who have struggled with traditional tests like IELTS and PTE.
🆕 What Are the New Approved English Tests?
In addition to IELTS, PTE Academic, and TOEFL iBT, the following tests are now officially accepted for visa purposes:
- ✅ MET – Michigan English Test
- ✅ LanguageCert Academic
- ✅ CELPIP – Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program
These newly introduced options are designed to give more flexibility to applicants and may be more suitable for certain individuals based on their learning style and background.
💡 Why This Matters for Visa Applicants
Over the years, PTE became a preferred choice for many visa applicants due to its user-friendly format and faster results. However, with the recent changes to PTE scoring from 7th August 2025, achieving higher equivalency scores (like 7 or 8 IELTS band equivalents) has become significantly harder.
With these new tests now recognised, applicants have wider choices and potentially easier pathways to meet their English requirements — whether applying for a student visa, 485, 482, or permanent residency.
