Planning to study at an Australian university in 2027? One of the most important steps for international students is meeting the English language requirements for their chosen course.
Australian universities accept several English proficiency tests, but the accepted test and required score can vary depending on the university, course and level of study.
The most commonly recognised tests include IELTS Academic, PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT, while some universities and courses also accept Cambridge English qualifications and other approved tests. Students should always confirm the latest requirements for their chosen course and institution.
Which English Tests Are Accepted by Australian Universities?
- IELTS Academic
IELTS Academic is one of the most widely recognised English tests for international university applicants. It assesses Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Required scores vary significantly by course, with professional programs sometimes requiring higher English proficiency.
- PTE Academic
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) is a widely accepted option for students planning to study in Australia. It assesses Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening through a computer-based format and provides an overall score as well as individual skill scores.
- TOEFL iBT
TOEFL iBT is accepted by a number of Australian universities and evaluates Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. Students should check that the specific TOEFL test format they intend to take is accepted.
- Cambridge English
Some Australian universities accept qualifications such as Cambridge C1 Advanced and Cambridge C2 Proficiency. Acceptance should be confirmed for the specific course and institution.
- Other English Tests
Australia has expanded the number of English tests accepted for certain Student visa purposes. These may include IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1 Advanced, OET, CELPIP General, LANGUAGECERT Academic and Michigan English Test. Visa acceptance should not automatically be assumed to mean university admission acceptance.
Is PTE Accepted by Australian Universities in 2027?
Yes, PTE Academic is currently accepted by many Australian universities, including universities in Brisbane. However, students planning for 2027 should check the exact course requirements, minimum
overall score, individual skill scores, accepted test format and any professional accreditation requirements before booking.
Why PTE Academic Is a Smart Choice for International Students
While Australian universities and the Department of Home Affairs accept multiple English proficiency tests, PTE Academic is one of the most preferred choices for international students, particularly for students who are comfortable with technology and prefer a fully computer-based testing experience.
PTE Academic assesses speaking, writing, reading and listening through a computer-based format, providing students with an integrated testing experience.
Fully Computer-Based & AI-Scored
One of the key reasons students choose PTE Academic is its computer-based testing environment and automated scoring approach. For students who feel more comfortable interacting with a computer than speaking directly to an examiner, this format can provide a more consistent and confident test-taking experience.
Fast and Convenient Results
For international students working towards university admission or other important deadlines, receiving results quickly can be a major advantage. Students should always confirm current result-processing times and the latest requirements before booking their test.
Integrated Scoring Across Multiple Skills
PTE Academic includes integrated tasks that can assess more than one English skill within the same question. Students can improve their performance strategically by understanding how different question types contribute to their overall result.
How IPT Brisbane Helps You Achieve Your Target PTE Score
Understanding university English requirements is one thing. Achieving the required score is another.
This is where the right preparation and expert guidance can make your PTE journey much easier.
At IPT Brisbane, students receive structured PTE preparation designed around their individual goals, current English level and required score. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach, our experienced trainers help students identify strengths, improve weaker areas and develop practical strategies for the PTE exam.
- Learn From Experienced PTE Experts
Our experienced English language and PTE trainers understand the exam format and the challenges students commonly face. Through targeted lessons, exam strategies, time-management techniques, practice questions and mock-test feedback, students can develop the skills and confidence needed to perform effectively on test day.
- Build a Customized Score Strategy
Every student has a different goal. Some may need to meet a university admission requirement, while others may be targeting a higher PTE score for future study or migration plans. Students may work
towards scores such as 58+, 65+ or 79+, depending on their pathway. Actual requirements vary, so students should confirm the requirement that applies to them. IPT Brisbane can help students work backwards from their required score and develop a targeted preparation plan.
- Targeted Strategies and Mock-Test Feedback
PTE success is not only about English knowledge. Students also need to understand the test format, manage their time and know how to approach different question types. IPT Brisbane supports students with targeted PTE strategies, time management, regular practice, mock-test preparation, performance analysis and feedback.
- End-to-End Guidance for Your Australian Study Journey
Your PTE preparation is part of a much bigger goal: studying and building your future in Australia. IPT Brisbane can support students throughout their preparation journey by helping them understand English-test requirements, identify an appropriate target score and prepare strategically for PTE Academic.
IELTS vs PTE vs TOEFL: Which Test Should You Take?
There is no single English test that is automatically right for every student. Your choice should depend on the requirements of your preferred university and course, as well as the test format in which you can perform comfortably. If PTE Academic is accepted for your course and suits your testing preferences, its computer-based format can make it an attractive option.
What English Score Do You Need for Australian University?
There is no single English score that applies to every Australian university. A student applying for one course may need a different score from another student applying for a different course at the same university. This is why students should prepare against the specific score requirement rather than a general benchmark.
Do University English Requirements and Student Visa Requirements Mean the Same Thing?
No. A university determines the English proficiency required for admission to a particular course, while the Australian Government separately determines English evidence and requirements applicable to a Student visa. Meeting a university’s English requirement does not automatically mean every visa requirement has been satisfied.
What Should Students Planning for 2027 Do?
University → Course → English requirement → Accepted test → Required score
Once you know the exact requirement, you can select the test that suits your application and begin targeted preparation. It is also important to check the university’s official website regularly because admission requirements can be updated.
Your Target Score Starts With the Right Preparation
Choosing an accepted English test is an important first step, but having a clear score goal and an effective preparation strategy can make the difference between simply taking the test and achieving the result you need.
If PTE Academic is the right choice for your university or study pathway, IPT Brisbane can help you prepare with expert guidance, targeted strategies and structured practice designed around your individual goals.
