Failed PTE? Score Report & Retake Plan

Receiving PTE scores below your target can be frustrating, especially when you have already spent weeks preparing. Before booking another attempt, build a focused PTE retake plan using your score report to decide what needs to change.

Start by comparing Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing with your required scores. Looking at them together can help you choose which tasks to review first.

Your scores give you clues, rather than an exact diagnosis of individual questions. Use your Skills Profile and fresh practice responses to confirm where you are losing marks.

What Does Your PTE Score Pattern Suggest?

Your score pattern Tasks to check first
Speaking and Listening are both below target Repeat Sentence, Retell Lecture and Summarise Group Discussion
Reading is below target Summarise Written Text, alongside Reading Fill in the Blanks and Reorder Paragraphs
Writing is below target, while Reading and Listening meet your requirements Essay Writing, followed by the quality of your other written responses

These are practice priorities. Several tasks assess more than one skill, so a weakness can affect more than one score.[1][2]

1. Speaking and Listening Are Both Low

Begin with Repeat Sentence, Retell Lecture and Summarise Group Discussion. All three assess Listening and Speaking.[2]

You may understand the general topic but miss important details. Alternatively, you may understand the recording but struggle to reproduce or organise its meaning when speaking.

For Repeat Sentence, record your answer and compare it with the original sentence. Identify the words and phrases you missed. Practise listening in meaningful chunks and repeating them clearly.

For Retell Lecture, check whether your notes capture the main topic and connected supporting ideas. A list of isolated words may be difficult to turn into a coherent response.

For Summarise Group Discussion, organise your notes by speaker. Check whether your response represents each person’s key contribution accurately, without mixing their ideas.

Speak clearly at a natural pace. Review both the information you include and how comfortably you deliver it.

2. Reading Is Low

Do not overlook Summarise Written Text (SWT) just because it appears in the Speaking and Writing section. It assesses both Reading and Writing.[2]

Review your summaries and ask:

A sentence can be grammatically correct while missing the passage’s central message. Avoid selecting unrelated lines simply because they are easy to connect.

However, low Reading does not automatically mean SWT is the cause. Check your accuracy in Reading Fill in the Blanks and Reorder Paragraphs too. Record whether you struggle with vocabulary, collocations, grammar, paragraph connections or time pressure.

Use those practice results to decide whether your priority is understanding passages, selecting answers or summarising meaning.

3. Writing Is Low, but Reading and Listening Are Alright

Make Essay Writing your first task to review. Essay directly assesses Writing, making it a sensible starting point for this score pattern.[2]

Check your plan before checking individual sentences:

Then review grammar, spelling, vocabulary and paragraph organisation.

For example, a question asking you to discuss both views needs a response that addresses both views. Writing fluently about only one side can leave part of the task unanswered.

If your essays are consistently strong in practice, examine your other written responses. Meeting your Reading and Listening targets does not guarantee that the writing in those tasks is accurate.

Turn Your Diagnosis into a Retake Plan

Set your priorities. Write down the gap between each required score and your result.

Test the suspected weaknesses. Complete fresh questions under timed conditions and review the actual responses.

Practise the specific problem. If you miss key lecture details, work on listening and notes. If your essay ideas are underdeveloped, work on planning and explanation.

Check consistency before rebooking. Use several practice sessions and realistic mock tests to assess progress, while maintaining the skills already meeting your target.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my PTE score report show exactly which task I did poorly in?

Your four skill scores can suggest which tasks to investigate, but they do not identify every individual mistake. Use your Skills Profile and fresh practice responses to confirm your priorities.

Which tasks should I review when Speaking and Listening are both low?

Start with Repeat Sentence, Retell Lecture and Summarise Group Discussion because these tasks assess both skills. Check your understanding of the recording and the accuracy of your spoken response.

Does a low Reading score mean my Summarise Written Text is weak?

SWT is worth checking because it assesses Reading and Writing. Also review your Reading-section tasks before deciding what caused the shortfall.

Should I focus on Essay if only my Writing score is below target?

Essay is a sensible first check. Review how completely you answer the question and develop your ideas, then examine grammar, spelling and the quality of your other written responses.
